Why Our Work Matters

Safe, Structured Afterschool Programmes for Children Grades R to 12

1 in 3 are Drop-outs:

1 in 3 youths on rural farms drop out of school early

Addiction in Youth:

Literacy Barriers:

8 in 10 South African children can’t read for understanding by the age of 10

Underserved Women:

Rural areas are home to women with the lowest level of education.

Our work matters for the children, youth and women of rural Western Cape farming towns. These areas are isolated and can sometimes be up to 50km away from the nearest town or community. Children are transported to the nearest school and then returned to the farm in the afternoon, where they are free to roam unsupervised.

Dropping out of school, getting pregnant, or engaging in substance abuse prevent these children from building a life that will help them out of a poverty cycle. Additionally, younger children who need remedial support to address learning barriers have little or no access to targeted support.

The Anna Foundation aims to bridge this gap by training and employing local rural women as facilitators to run the programmes for ages 5 to 18. These sessions include literacy and numeracy assistance, sports, life skills development, and cultural exposure.

The Anna Foundation’s after-school support gives parents and farm owners peace of mind knowing that their children are in a safe and enriching environment. By addressing the needs of rural children, a huge step is taken toward alleviating poverty in these communities. The Anna Foundation aims to teach these women and children that through dedication, persistence and hard work, each one can offer value in their community and dream bigger for the future.

Testimonials

Fundraiser and Sponsor Stories

Fundraiser Participant

“There were dark moments on those trails — broken ribs, gastro failure, stages where I genuinely had nothing left. In those moments, when quitting felt like the only rational choice, I thought about the Anna Foundation learners who would be at the finish line, cheering us on with handmade signs bearing our names. That was not something I could let down. Kyle and I raised over R65,000 for the Anna Foundation, and we couldn't be prouder. Supporting early childhood development and giving kids access to sport is a cause worth every painful kilometre.”

“This past year, we gave over 100 bikes to children at the Anna Foundation for them to use back and forth to school. We taught them how to build the bikes and then how to ride them, including changing gears, stopping, and managing terrain. It was an incredible experience to give bikes to the kids of the Anna Foundation.”
