Ways You Can Help

Afternoon Programme Support

You can help our facilitator at an after-school project by reading to children, assisting with homework or doing fun sports games outside. You will need to commit to a minimum of 1 afternoon a week for this level of involvement with the children.

2 Hours/week for a term minimum

Event Participation

The children of the Anna Foundation take part in running or cycling events throughout the year. Come join us and jog alongside a younger runner to motivate them.

“It has been a fulfilling and significant experience to volunteer for the Anna Foundation. It has given me the chance to help people and communities while honing important communication and interpersonal skills. My involvement has helped me better appreciate the difficulties others face and the value of empathy, compassion, and community involvement. My dedication to improving the lives of others has been reinforced by the experience, which has also greatly aided in my professional and personal development.”

"Working with Katy and the kids from Neethlingshof was wonderful. I spent a lot of time with them and loved every minute! From helping them with their homework to teaching them dance routines, they were really amazing and showed so much potential and talent. Being a volunteer with the Anna Foundation will be something I’ll remember and cherish for the rest of my life.”

Volunteer FAQs

What You May Be Wondering

Working with an organisation like ours may come with a lot of questions. We answer the most popular ones below.

Do I need experience to work with rural children of the Anna Foundation?

No. Work experience in the classroom or with children is beneficial but not required to become a volunteer with the Anna Foundation.

If you have a passion for empowering children, coaching sports, or teaching arts or drama, then your skills can bring fresh insights to our 3 Rs Programme. Any students or professionals with remedial training can provide valuable support to children with learning barriers.

Anyone who has a heart to help underserved communities make brilliant partners and volunteers. We believe in the holistic care of the children we work with, and above all else, they need love, understanding and people who believe in them.

Time commitment depends on how you’d like to get involved. We appreciate the help of short-term, once-off and termly volunteers.

Volunteers are needed on an ad hoc or flexible basis to help at specific events or behind the scenes with admin and marketing. However, if you want to facilitate one of our after-school programmes, then we require a deeper commitment. These children need stability and routine. Volunteers are encouraged to commit to being at a project every week on a specific day for at least one to two hours for at least one school term. This supports bonding between you and the children, which helps them to learn and progress.

The children’s mother tongue is Afrikaans. If you want to help them with their educational activities, it is best if you are able to communicate in Afrikaans. However, the children and women do understand English and if helping out with sports or games then it is not required that you speak Afrikaans.

We primarily serve children attending local schools in rural communities of the Western Cape.

Volunteers can contact us to find out which farm is close and in need of additional support. The Anna Foundation has been working with rural farming communities in the Western Cape for over 20 years.

We do not offer specific training to volunteers, however a project manager will be present with any volunteer when they start and for the first few sessions that the volunteer is at the project. We also encourage volunteers to attend a formal training session offered to the women in our programmes, as this will give them a good understanding of the programme.

If a volunteer is offering a Friday Fun day, our project managers will assist in the planning process and be present on the day.

Yes, we love collaborating with groups who have a fun afternoon project in mind. Companies or teams can contact us with their 2-hour workshop ideas, whether it’s gardening, painting cushion covers, a treasure hunt, or exciting obstacle-course games.

Together, we can bring your idea to life and plan an enjoyable afternoon that will ignite ideas, creativity and inject joy into their day (and yours).
